Don was group leader on route to Ft Knox basic training. During 4 month of training in Battery B 509th Armored Div Field Artillery Battalion, he received 4 weeks of officer training and received 2nd Div US Infantry Div Non-Commissioned Officers for outstanding combat leader. Don rode USNS for a week to Japan. He took 2 weeks of chemical warfare school before deployed to Korea where he was leader of a 5 man tank team. Don was wounded 9-22-52 receiving mortar shrapnel in his back which he carried for the rest of his 89 year life. He was in Japan hospital when awarded Purple Heart on 10-11-52. On 10-22-52 he was back on Korea's front line with his same 5 man team. Don was promoted to Corporal on 3-22-53. He was discharged from active duty on 10-16-53 and was on recall duty until 10-16-1959.
